Windscreen Chip Repairs

MOT regulations 2026 for windscreen repairs

The new MOT regulations for windscreen repairs in 2026 include strict limits on the size of chips and cracks that can cause an MOT fail. Here are the key points to remember:

  • Damage in Zone A: A chip larger than 10mm in the driver's direct line of sight is a fail. 1
  • Damage in Zone B: A chip larger than 40mm in the rest of the wiper-swept area is a fail. 1
  • Damage outside the swept area: Damage outside the wiper-swept area is not tested. 1
  • Repair vs. Replacement: A properly repaired chip passes an MOT in almost every case. 1
  • Edge cracks: Cracks running to the edge of the glass and in Zone A or B are an MOT fail and a structural concern. 1
It's crucial to address any windscreen damage promptly to avoid failing the MOT. If you notice any visible damage, it's advisable to have it repaired or replaced before your MOT test. 1
